Are we in a crisis, recovering from crisis or facing a crisis? The problem seems to be that crisis is difficult to grasp. What the problem is, is not easily understood. What will happen if global warming continues? (Global warming will continue). What if the financial system continues to develop in ways that will eventually lead to some kind of a breakdown? What would it mean if we knew exactly what will happen without immediate radical measures? Would the certainty be sufficient to ensure that radical measures be taken? Probably not. There is no such thing as certainty in a world of competing explanations. Strength of evidence, convergence of opinion among specialists, increased public awareness: These are slow creatures and more used to reacting than proactively responding. So we don’t understand what the crisis is, whether there is a crisis or what kind of crisis we should expect. But even if we did, it would not change anything.
